 Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center continues to host Woodland Advisor workshops. Completing the Woodland Advisor program involves participating in a training consisting of 15 workshops that will prepare you to improve the health, productivity and beauty of your forest.  Whether your property is five or 500 acres, you can benefit from this program.

Minnesota’s Forests: Ecology, History and People                                             C1
This introductory course gives an overview of general forest ecology and how forests grow and develop.  We will also discuss how forests change through time due to disturbances including wind, fire, forest management, insects and disease.  An opportunity for lively discussion and an exchange of ideas.

How to use a GPS Receiver                                                                   elective
Have you ever tried to return to a favorite deer stand or fishing hole, only to be unable to find it?  GPS can help you navigate with confidence.  At the end of class you will be able to use a GPS to calculate area, navigate to a waypoint and more.  GPS units are provided for use during class.

Many forest landowners don’t have a very good idea of what they own.  Do you want to learn how to estimate how much wood is in a tree?  Or how much wood is in your woodlot?  This course will introduce you to the basics of forest measurement.  It will help you better understand what a bid from a logger or a volume estimate from a forester means.

Balsam Fir as a Profitable Forest Product                                                                        C5
Control understory competition in your pine stands while making a profit.  Forest specialty products are a growing industry, including balsam trees and boughs.  Learn forest management strategies for the sustainable harvest of balsam for Christmas trees and holiday decorations.  Optional: Stay for the Christmas Tree Cut from 12:00 to 4:00 and cut your own Christmas tree or make a swag.

Learn how to manage a maple woods and properly select trees for tapping.  We will compare a home operation to a commercial sugaring operation.  A unique opportunity to interact with Dave Rogotske, a local resident who makes his living off the land as Minnesota’s second largest maple syrup producer and an Alaskan salmon fisherman!
