K-12 Opportunities for students

Boulder is an ideal outdoor classroom for a variety of K-12 lessons with its close proximity to Duluth, access to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and trained environmental education staff.
Tours and programs must be booked a minimum of two weeks in advance. Book your group by contacting us at 218-721-3731 or boulder@d.umn.edu. These tours and programs involve $4/student fee. |

People and Forests- (Offered Spring, Summer, and Fall - Grades 4-6) Students explore the dynamic forest ecosystem and the interactions between humans and forests.Click here for more information on pre- and post-visit lessons, video, and other teaching materials.... |

Glacial Geology- (Offered Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter- Grades 4-12) - Presentation with a variety of visual aids to help kids understand how ice shaped the landscape and major watersheds of Minnesota. Students make glacial features in a stream table with flowing water. |

Macroinvertebrate Mania - (Offered Spring, Summer, and Fall - Grades 2-5) Students discover diversity of life in a wetland. Usually over 30 species of macroinvertebrates are found by students dipping small nets into a wetland. The students also are coached on how to identify them under a microscope using a dichotomous key. |

Archaeology - Mock Dig Site (Offered Spring, Summer, and Fall - Grades 3-5) Students learn scientific method and cultural history as they conduct a mock dig to find bones, fire rings, points, pottery, etc. They are digging, sifting, recording, and reconstructing the story of what they find and where they find it. |

Exotic Invasives - (Offered Spring, Summer, and Fall -Grades 3-12) Students extract and identify exotic earthworms as they discover the impacts these invasive species have on forest ecology. |

Winter Survival - (Offered Winter - Grades 3-12) Students learn basic winter survival skills such as how to build shelter, make a fire, and boil water to make a warm drink. This activity usually lasts about 3 hours. |
