Forest Systems

Class Objective: Students will understand nutrient flow in a forest ecosystem, basic components of how a tree grows, and how to use a dichotomous key.

Possible Lesson Activies
(Offered Spring, Summer, Fall- Grades 3-12)

Forest Types: Students can travel on a pontoon and/or by foot to explore different forest types.

Invasive Species. Students will participate in an activity showing how soil and the forest floor are inpacted by worms. Further investigation will allow student to identify the worms living in different areas of the forest.

Tree Identification. Students will learn how to use a dichotomous key and then put the skills to practice identifying several common Northern Minnesota Trees.
